Piz Traunter Ovas: Loop via Chamanna Jenatsch

Piz Traunter Ovas is rather forsaken in relation to its neighbours (in particular Piz Surgonda, slightly higher and whose access is more direct), which it makes it beautifully peaceful. Route often without trails. However the more central position of Piz Traunter Ovas makes the view of the summit even more spectacular. Plunging view of Chamanna Jenatsch 500m lower! In good weather conditions, the descent via the cirque of Traunter Ovas opposite Piz Bever and Piz Suvretta is aesthetically fabulous.

Day 1

Climb of Piz Traunter Ovas and descent on Chamanna Jenatsch - 6h - around 10km

Go up the Val d'Agnel on the orographical right bank of the water-course until around 2360m. Traverse the water-course and fork towards the NNE to reach and follow a long flat area between the Corn Alv and Muot Cotschen until Fuorcla Alva (2791m). Then head NNE (some short descents) until Fuorcla Margun (2945m). After a downward traverse of about fifty meters towards the NW, continue in this direction until Fuorcla Traunter Ovas (3040m). Go back up the W slope until the summit (3152m). Warning: the rock at the summit is not very stable and slightly exposed .

Take the trail to Fuorcla Traunter Ova, then descend the slopes located between Piz Traunter Ovas and Ova Traunter Ovas (towards the E then N). Pass to the left of the rock band marked by spot elevation 2618 on the map to avoid a small gorge and flat areas which are not very pleasant to ski. At the SW end of Val Bever you reach a broad flat area (~2340m) where you put on your skins. Traverse Ova de Err as best you can based on the snow bridges. Then traverse the southern slopes ascending to reach Chamanna Jenatsch (2652m).

Day 2

Traverse N-S of Fuorcla d'Agnel -2h30 - around 8km

Roughly follow the level line of the hut which skirts the E face of Piz Picuogl then go up Vadret d'Agnel (towards the N) until the Fuorcla d'Agnel (2983m). Redescend Val d'Agnel completely to the S while remaining on the right bank of the water-course until the parking lot. Possibility of descending combined with the ascent of Piz Surgonda (3196m) by going up its SW slopes around 2700m or with the climb of Piz Campagnung (2826m) by going up its E slopes around 2600m.
